Ambitious new director at Lyme Regis Museum looking forward

The former County Museums Adviser for Dorset David Tucker has big plans for the Lyme Regis Museum, after taking up his new role as the institution’s director. A man with 20 years of museum experience who played a vital role in securing important fossils for Jurassic Coast museums, he is hoping that the museum becomes to Lyme Regis what the Tate is to St Ives in Cornwall. Plans for Torquay development to be unveiled to the public

Members of the public will have an opportunity to view the first images of the £48 million Totnes riverside development, as captured by an artist. Detailed plans will also be unveiled for the first time this weekend, with developers hoping the consultation days will gain approval from the general public. Magnificent marble exhibition set to open in Torquay

An exhibition examining the stunning heritage of South Devon’s internationally renowned marble industry has been opened at a museum in Torquay. Entitled Marvellous Marble: South Devon’s Forgotten Industry, the display at Torquay Museum will study the stunning objects, including tables and jewellery, produced whilst the industry was in its heyday. Constructed from the area’s deposits of decorative limestone formed 400 million years ago, a particularly important object on display is an intricately designed goldfinch decorated platter made for QueenVictoriain 1852. Dorset festival set for return next month

A festival in Dorset is to embrace French music and family fun this summer, elements that will help form a packed programme of fantastic events. The Cerne Abbas Music Festival, an annual event which originally began in July 1991, will take place from 7 – 10 June and will include performances from festival regulars the Gaudier Ensemble, an outstanding group of European musicians who will play a series of concerts in St Mary’s Church. New signal box to be unveiled at Corfe Castle

A new brick and wood signal box has been constructed by volunteers in Corfe Castle and will be officially opened later. The Victorian-style structure, which has been built to look like the original one from 1885, will be opened by Rail Minister Theresa Villiers. Costing £48,000 to build and four years to complete, it will be linked to Network Rail’s Basingstoke signalling centre and has been built ahead of the regular reinstatement of passenger trains between Swanage and Wareham next year. Free fashion show set for Poole shopping centre

Future style icons and aspiring models are to be found in abundance at a Poole shopping centre later this month, when a free fashion show takes place. The Dolphin Shopping Centre will play host to some glamorous models, who will sashay down the catwalk showcasing the latest summer collections in preparation for the impending holiday season, whilst shoppers will have the chance to win a summer wardrobe. Lost Agatha Christie play uncovered

A Dutch collector and freelance journalist has uncovered a ‘lost’ play by Queen of Crime and pride of Torquay Agatha Christie and intends to showcase the work in a Torquay museum during the Christie Festival in September. Ralf Stultiens discovered the unpublished play ‘Mrs Perry’ among a host of items belonging to Hughes Massey & Co Ltd, a former literary agency for Agatha Christie in London. More awards for Bournemouth beaches

Tourism officials in Dorset have received further good news about their premier seaside resort after it was revealed some major awards have been handed out to six coastal areas in Bournemouth. The coveted Blue Flag status was awarded to Alum Chine, Durley Chine, Fisherman’s Walk and Southbourne Beach, an accolade awarded based on the beaches’ high standards of water quality, safety and cleanliness. Quality Coast awards were given to Bournemouth Pier Beachand Boscombe Pier, which is awarded for facilities and cleanliness. Line-up confirmed for Dorchester Festival

The line-up has been confirmed for the upcoming Dorchester Festival, in what will be a five day celebration of international music, street theatre, film, comedy and outdoor performances. Running from 1 – 5 June, entertainment will come from all four corners of the world to bring the Dorset town to life, aptly reflecting Olympic year.
